Why Stay In Shelter?

Domestic Violence is a problem many people will face at some point in their lives. Unfortunately, in lots of these cases the abuse will escalate to a point where individuals are no longer safe in their own homes. The House of Ruth is a resource for any woman who is experiencing this type of abuse from an intimate partner. House of Ruth exists to provide emergency shelter, food, aid and support to the survivors of domestic violence and their children who have reached the decision to leave the violent situation. Our shelter is a safe, confidential place where women can stay to recuperate from their emotional or physical traumas and plan for their future safety. While shelter residents must make their own plans and decisions, case managers are available to make sure they have access to the information they need to move forward. Shelter advocates are always available to discuss their options.

Someone might consider staying with us if…

  • Their partner’s behavior is making them fearful
  • The violence in their home is escalating
  • They are concerned for their safety and the safety of their children
  • They have left their home and are now being stalked by their partner

Call The House of Ruth with any safety concerns you have about your romantic relationship!

What to Expect In Shelter

Our shelter is a house located in a residential neighborhood. Residents will stay in their own room. Residents with children will share their room with their children. The common spaces include a playroom, laundry room, living room, dining room, kitchen, back yard and 2 bathrooms. We do have 1 handicap accessible room.

During their stay in shelter, residents will be offered information and guidance on how to overcome their abusive relationships and information on counseling. Residents will also be given information on how to secure housing, employment, and any other resources they might need.

Beyond physical safety, The House of Ruth staff is available in the shelter 24 hours a day to provide emotional support to help heal and empower our residents.
